Three Phases of Healing

Winter is a tough time of year for drivers. Please slow down and be careful when driving in the slick snow and ice.

If you do get in an accident it is very important to come in as quick as possible for care. How you heal from an accident depends on the care you get. The first two months of care are the most important.

When we are injured we go through three phases of healing. I think it is important to know these phases so I want to list them to you:

First Phase: Acute Inflammatory Phase-this is the first 72 hours. This is when you get the most swelling, and sharp pain. Care at this phase is relieving pain and removing inflammation.

Second Phase: Repair Phase-this is the two months after the injury. This phase is the most crucial time for care. This is when the torn tissues heal with scar tissue. Scar tissue is not as strong as the original tissue, is less elastic and does not lay down in a uniform pattern like you original tissue. Care at this phase is focused at mobility of the joints which allows the scar tissue to lay down in the most beneficial manner.

Third Phase: Remodeling Phase-this can last up to a year after an injury. During this phase you have to be careful because the scar tissue can get sticky and glob together. during this phase you may not be under active chiropractic care but you need to be active and keep up on maintenance care.

Understanding this process helps us understand the importance of care. If you know anyone involved in an accident it is important to get them into the office for care. We focus on these phases and do all we can to get the injured person well.
